ÁCCENTED: “Writers in Diaspora”

Mark your calendars and and join us for the premiere of the Fall 2021 season of ÁCCENTED: Dialogues in Diaspora, presented by the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN). This season, we will welcome a distinguished lineup of authors, artists, poets, cultural producers, and community organizers across the Southeast Asian diaspora. Hosted by Pulitzer-prize winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen, these virtual events are open to the public on Facebook Live and YouTube.

ÁCCENTED returns this month with “Writers in Diaspora.” This virtual event features Ly Ky Tran and Violet Kupersmith, both emerging writers with new books released this past year, in conversation with Pulitzer-prize winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen on the depths and processes of becoming a writer in diaspora.

About The Guests:

Ly Ky Tran graduated from Columbia University in 2014 with a degree in Creative Writing and Linguistics. She has received fellowships from MacDowell, Art Omi, and Yaddo. House of Sticks is her first book.

Violet Kupersmith is the author of the 2014 short story collection The Frangipani Hotel and the new novel Build Your House Around My Body. She previously taught English with the Fulbright Program in the Mekong Delta and was the 2015/16 David T.K. Wong Fellow at the University of East Anglia. She has lived in Da Lat and Saigon, Vietnam, and currently resides in the U.S.

About The Host:

Viet Thanh Ngyuen is the author of The Sympathizer, Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War, The Refugees, and Race and Resistance: Literature, Politics and Asian America. His most recent book was Chicken of the Sea, written with his son Ellison. His most recent book is The Committed, the sequel to The Sympathizer.

About The Moderator:

Philip Nguyen is the emcee for ÁCCENTED: Dialogues in Diaspora presented by the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN). He teaches Asian American Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University and is the Executive Director for the Vietnamese American Roundtable, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in San Jose, California. Philip serves as the President of the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations (UNAVSA) and as the Co-Chair of the Young Vietnamese Americans (YVA) Committee for PIVOT – The Progressive Vietnamese American Organization.
