Bee Nguyen represents District 89 in the Georgia State Legislature, a seat once held by Stacey Abrams, and currently, she is running for Secretary of State in Georgia. In addition to being the first Vietnamese-American to win election to the Georgia House, Representative Nguyen was the first Asian-American Democratic woman to hold a state office in Georgia. Her family inspired her to start her own nonprofit to educate and empower girls in under-resourced schools. She has spent more than ten years advocating for women and girls, communities of color, and refugee families. In May 2020 she declared her candidacy for Secretary of State in Georgia, whose primary responsibilities include supervising elections and maintaining public records. This is a particularly crucial position after Donald Trump falsely tried to discredit Georgia’s 2020 election results. Georgia has evolved into the South’s most electorally competitive state. In the wake of the state flipping to Democrats in the 2020 presidential election and the Senate run-off victories for Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, the state’s Republican legislature and governor have asserted partisan power in elections and further restricted access to the ballot box.
