9 Days in the Spratly Islands / 9 Ngày Trên Quần Đảo Trường Sa

In Search of Peace and Sovereignty / Tìm Kiếm Hòa Bình và Chủ Quyền

Note: This essay is written in English by Z.M. Quynh. The Vietnamese translation, by BeBe Khuê Jacobs & Nguyễn Quốc Hùng, is woven immediately after each paragraph like waves at sea, undulating between the two languages.

For nine days the sun rises and sets over the same sea – a sea of many names. To the Vietnamese, for centuries, she has been “Biển Đông” or the “East Sea.” To the Philippines, she is the “West Philippine Sea.” For the western world, she is the “South China Sea.” To the sea, she is simply the sea.

In the course of nine days, I visit nine islands and outposts, the smallest is the size of my bedroom, the largest – about 37 football fields. The sea’s waning caress is the same no matter where I stand on an island; each lap of her tendrils massaging cement shorelines, every reach holding more meaning than the natural journey of the salt waters.

Trong thời gian chín ngày, tôi đi thăm chín hòn đảo và tiền đồn, hòn đảo nhỏ nhất bằng phòng ngủ của tôi, lớn nhất – khoảng 37 sân bóng đá. Sự vuốt ve yếu dần của biển vẫn giống nhau dù tôi đứng ở đâu trên hòn đảo; mỗi vòng xoay cuốn mơn trớn bờ biển xi măng, mỗi lần động tới, nó mang nhiều ý nghĩa hơn là cuộc hành trình tự nhiên này của nước biển mặn.

  1. Control | Điều Khiển

In May 2022, before hurricane season, I was invited to join a delegation of 40 overseas Vietnamese and over 200 Vietnamese nationals to visit Trường Sa, an island district 248 nautical miles southeast of the coastal city of Cam Ranh in Vietnam.

Within a few hours of disembarking from the shoreline, I join a line of delegates on the deck of the Naval vessel that carries us. Within hours, I am surrounded by the sea, an invited traveler in her tresses, but she never invited me.

I battle the expected anxiety that would affect any land-based person faced with a nine-day trip on the high seas. Though the vessel is strong, and the crew skilled, ultimately she, the sea, controls our fate. She and her partners, the other elements out of our control – the sun that evaporates her, the clouds that form from her droplets, the wind that blows her, and the moon that pulls her– they all control our fate.

They dictate whether or not our delegation will be able to visit all of the scheduled islands in our itinerary, whether or not we will make it back in time for our flights home, whether or not we will make it at all.

“Whoever controls the sea, controls us all,” a delegate murmurs to me. My stomach clenches into a fist. I take a deep breath and decide to let go of the mirage of control that I have. I force myself to trust her – the sea, to trust the ship, the Vietnamese organizing committee, the Navy, and all of my shipmates to pull us through nine days at sea where there would limited cellular range and no option to turn around if things got rough, no escape if COVID rages on the ship, nowhere to hide if territorial tensions heat up…
