Vi\u1ec7t Ki\u1ec1u<\/em> in the news<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

Dissident poet Nguy\u1ec5n Ch\u00ed Thi\u1ec7n<\/a>, called the “Solzhenitsyn of Vietnam,” died on October 2. Many of his poems are considered masterpieces. His actions in giving money to “other people who need it more” also resonate with us. Read a friend’s tribute<\/a> on diaCRITICS.\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2022 In a five-candidate race, Tri Ta may become<\/a> the first Vietnamese-American mayor in Westminster.\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2022 In addition to Photographer An-My L\u00ea recently receiving the “genius grants,” two other Vietnamese Americans<\/a>, Scholar Hu\u1ef3nh Sanh Th\u00f4ng and Dr. Hu\u1ef3nh M\u1ef9 H\u1eb1ng, have also been awarded The MacArthur Fellowship within the past twenty-five years.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Ten nuns from Vietnam<\/a> have come to minister to the large Vietnamese community around the Resurrection of Our Lord parish in St. Louis, Missouri. Interestingly, the newly-arrived nuns are watching cartoons to supplement their English classes.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vietnamese-American actor Dustin Nguyen will direct and play the lead in Viet Nam\u2019s first action-fantasy movie,<\/a> \u201cL\u1eeda Ph\u1eadt.\u201d\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2022 The case involving the slaying of Michelle Le last year.went to trial<\/a> The prosecution presented their evidences against the murder suspect<\/a>, and the jury found her guilty.<\/a>\"\"<\/p>\n

News about Vi\u1ec7t Nam<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

\u2022 A Vietnamese cargo ship sank off Sri Lanka<\/a>; four crew members remain missing.\"\"<\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 Typhoon Son-Tinh<\/a> killed three persons and injured 29 people in Vietnam.\"\"<\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 Another boat accident<\/a> occurred in popular tourist site of Ha Long Bay.\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2022 Two Vietnamese musicians were sentenced to prison<\/a> for criticizing the government. One of the musicians was Vi\u1ec7t Khang who wrote the patriotic songs Anh L\u00e0 Ai<\/em> and Vi\u1ec7t Nam T\u00f4i \u0110\u00e2u<\/em><\/a> that have galvanized Vi\u1ec7t Ki\u1ec1us around the world. Tr\u00fac H\u1ed3’s petition resulted in a White House response.<\/a>\"\"<\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 In another case, state police arrested and jailed a student<\/a> for distributing supposedly “anti-state” leaflets.<\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong acknowledged that the government had failed to curb corruption.<\/a> Also, several recent events may have indicated power struggles<\/a> between Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and President Truong Tan Sang. However, the Prime Minister seemed to have survive the leadership challenge.<\/a><\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 A Vietnamese government official noted that remittances and investments<\/a> from Vietnamese living abroad reach nearly US $20 billion a year.<\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 At the ASEAN Maritime Forum, Vietnam advocated peaceful resolution<\/a> concerning the current territorial disputes between Japan, China, and Korea. After the meeting, Chinese officials expressed satisfaction over its Vietnamese lackeys.<\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 Ireland has offered to help<\/a> clear unexploded bombs and other explosive devices from American bombings. Also, US Ambassador to Vietnam announced a grant of $1.6 million to remove unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmines<\/a> in central Quang Binh and Quang Nam provinces.<\/p>\n


\n

\u2022 Despite the slower economic growth<\/a> predicted for Vietnam and Moody’s downgrading, analysts think development has been “quite good”<\/a> in Vietnam. Also, Ernst & Young’s seal of approval<\/a> may portend good news for Vietnam’s economic outlook.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Sadly, though, imported Chinese-made toys are forcing Vietnamese traditional toy makers out of business<\/a>.<\/p>\n
