in the afternoon, while waiting for trains to come and leave, we’d sit opposite one another, so one could not see the other

we displayed our lives there, the games of small children, each one understanding that other person in their own way and i, in the end still know nothing about him

i heard the broken rattling of ideas in his head, we stuck out tongues to lick the stream of pale dream light

an afternoon’s noise sunk at the station as the train shuddered on its rails, a deaf person gave me a hairpin which i dropped at some point

I extract him from me, bit by bit, the smell of stagnant rainwater, a stain on the face, strands of hair shed on my coat’s shoulder, the bra strap exposed, his tickling fingers on me, an old man selling tea on the street slowly discarding the spoiled longans

I told him goodbye but forgot to say thank you, the blind spot of my fate that in a moment doesn’t know itself

"nhathuyen_sketch1"

for years now, I have forgotten the old games somewhere, out of laziness, i don’t know anything more about him, only sometimes in a way, i eat the pieces of memory, silently, slowly, always hungry, until he disappears, what i imagined about anguish, was only silence in the end

until i am suddenly kissing him in a dream, what i imagined was silence, an enduring resonance like the corpse-dry broom of a haggard street sweeper

"nhathuyen_sketch2"an afternoon swells with torrential grey clouds that hover above the street, the anesthesia in loud breaking waves, we sit on pavement, holding hands drifting along behind

the movements of bodies, a school of leaping fish follow your steps from the ocean their grounded fins a vanishing shadow, there only remains traces of blood

entangling our rubbing toes in a warm smell, tapping off a list of injury, long scars, failed promises, quiet sufferings, months and years that pass unkept, hours dazed, nightmares flash our spirits into focus, and we have forgotten that appetite for destruction, that we should return to the old ways just watching the beauty of wild reeds withering and be a bit more fond of emptiness

last night the ocean called repeatedly while we were entwined as if beside each other a million years, the first man to have plunged his face into the vagina of a sobbing woman and she envisioning the birth of new bodies, and she ignorant to his gradual disappearance and

a school of ocean fish still leaping behind her steps, through cities, towns, streets, fins grinding down, traces of scattered blood

i know your side, clouds swoop down on the ocean consoling it with a legend of extinct wild fish that blurred into dissolution, here afternoon swells with a grey storm, here tongue-tied traces of blood, here someone like me barefoot still waiting for you, over there someone like me still believing we’ll arrive, entwined and swimming in teal waters rising like smoke, the ghosts in us will stop squirming and fade away, no one who knows us will disregard this sky this ocean swallowing the whole of us in its stomach of exuberant blue

as i bear the essence of the fish, i will again speak to you of the ocean

impossible to return to the deeply buried beginning, i voluntarily undulate with the games of waves and speed of the wind’s hand, not worried about the stream and having forgotten my school

there is much i keep under the scales: echo of the deep sea, smell of seaweed, dusty water, heaving tides, corpses adrift, phases of the moon full and crescent, afternoons of cold grey sun, loneliness and immeasurably tender love reserved for wandering hearts, and waves whose life’s purpose is to erode the walls between hearts and roar out unsharable pain

though we made no promise, i have come back

in winter, as everything is shattering and just to realize i no longer cling to anything except the words that fall when your arms and the ocean no longer open, it is only the scales of "nhathuyen_sketch4"fish that float glossily under the sun at the end of a day that offered itself to me, to wait
