About the Artwork:

The Year of the Ox is a period for patient and steady work, for deliberate and devoted effort to plow and sow what we wish to harvest. The Ox is celebrated as an earthy builder, a grower of seeds and intentions. At DVAN we channel that ethic and energy, forming solid structures and moving toward a future that feels inspired and assured for diasporic Vietnamese voices and stories. In 2021, we submitted paperwork to gain status as a non-profit organization. To celebrate the Year of the Ox, artists Matt Huynh and Christine Nguyen created these unique prints specially for DVAN, their unique interpretations of that Ox spirit.

About the Artist:

Matt Huynh is a Vietnamese-Australian visual artist and storyteller. His bold brush and ink paintings are informed by calligraphic Eastern sumi-e ink traditions and popular Western comic books.

His illustrated essays, comics and animations interrogate the vast repercussions of war, with a particular focus on amplifying diasporic voices, telling refugee narratives and the experiences of asylum seekers and migrant communities.

Huynh's paintings, comics and murals have been exhibited by the MoMA, The Smithsonian, The Sydney Opera House, Brooklyn Museum, and New York Historical Society. His work has been honored by the Eisners, National Magazine Awards, Pulitzer, Webbys and World Illustration Awards. Huynh lives and works in New York City.
