Responding to demand, DVAN is excited to offer more programming that supports writers and creative members of our community to collaboratively learn, create, and grow alongside established diasporic Vietnamese and Southeast Asian artists. If you are a writer-educator interested in presenting a craft talk or facilitating a workshop, we also would love to hear from you. Please email course proposals and resumes to H’Rina DeTroy.

DVAN’s Writing Series in Memoir

In late 2023, we launched the DVAN Writing Series in Memoir, a three-part sequence of online classes covering Craft, Workshop, and Editing within a culturally specific Vietnamese/Southeast Asian lens. Sequence 1, offered in October, was the first session of the Memoir Writing Series and a six-week online seminar on Craft. For early spring 2024, DVAN will offer Sequence 2, which focuses on the Workshop, where participants exchange memoir drafts for group discussion and feedback. Sequence 3: Editing for publication will follow later in the year.

The full three Sequences are designed cumulatively, meaning that they are offered in an order that builds from basic fundamentals to more advanced concepts. For participants who take all three sessions, DVAN is piloting a certification program. Designing and leading the instruction of our DVAN Writing Series in Memoir is H’Rina DeTroy, our Residencies and Workshops Manager, award-winning writer, and diaCRITICS’s contributing editor.

Which Sequence is right for you?

If you have never taken a creative writing class, it is recommended to start with Sequence 1 in Craft. If you have a completed rough draft of a few chapters or essays, consider Sequence 2 in Workshop. If you have a few revised chapters, you may be ready for Sequence 3 in Editing for Publication. Feedback from past participants

I had the opportunity to join a craft seminar on memoir led by H'Rina DeTroy through DVAN this fall and it was such a lovely experience to be in a writing space with fellow writers from the Southeast Asian diaspora. H'Rina facilitated a warm, welcoming space for writers at all stages of memoir-writing, and shared lessons and frameworks to jumpstart (or continue) our memoir writing. By leading us through a close reading of House of Sticks by Ly Tran and providing thoughtful writing prompts throughout the series, H'Rina helped me think about what kind of voice and stories I want to tell through my own writing.

Participant of the October 2023 DVAN Writing Series in Memoir: Craft

I love getting writing prompts designed for diasporic writers like myself. It's generative. It triggers creative writing sprees that otherwise wouldn't happen. It helps me move forward when I'm stuck. It nudges me to think about things that I otherwise wouldn't connect to my personal story.
