DVAN’s Memoir Writing Series: Craft
Due to demand, DVAN is excited to host more workshops to support writers and creative members of our community to collaboratively learn, work, and create alongside established diasporic Vietnamese artists.
Our upcoming Memoir Writing Series will provide aspiring and emerging memoir writers a chance to hone their craft within a culturally specific Vietnamese/Southeast context. A three-part sequence of online classes, this workshop covers craft, writing exercises, and editing, and prepares participants for publication. Award-winning writer, DiaCritic’s contributing editor, and workshop instructor, H’Rina DeTroy will once again lead this online memoir classes in creative writing.
Starting in October 2023, the first sequence of the Memoir Writing Series is a six-week online seminar on Craft. We will explore the art of memoir and personal narrative through craft discussions on the award-winning memoir House of Sticks by Ly Ky Tran and other readings. We will use this text and generative writing exercises as a springboard for the exploration of our individual stories, family narratives, and reflections on our collective, diasporic Vietnamese/Southeast Asian history. Participants will leave with creative drafts meant to spark continued writing and reflection, preparing them for the next sequence in the DVAN Memoir Writing Series dedicated to workshopping.
