Generation Tales

Who are we, actually? “We” as part of society, as a generation, as a diaspora? It is no simple matter to find ourselves between relations, expectations and prejudices. Music and art can be supportive in this process to find a voice and become visible and audible—inside and outside the Viet-German diaspora.

The video series “Generation Tales” takes place between different times and places. By connecting fragments of past, present and future, the diasporic becomes a lived experience. In the plots of the videos, boundaries between fiction and autobiography are blurred. The protagonists recount moments of their lives from their perspective and tell us a part of the Viet-German history and their generation. On the center stage of the stories are music, generational divides, love, memory and (non) belonging. The video series is a confrontation with cultural productions of the Viet-German community and processes elements of the melodramatic performances of the Vietnamese variety series, Paris by Night. Another feature are the audio snippets from the radio show Voice of Home (Tiếng Quê Hương) which was broadcasted in Vietnamese language in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) the year of German reunification and has recently been found in the German Radio Archives. It was broadcasted at a time when global political developments broke into the lives of Vietnamese contract workers in the GDR, changed their lives and set up the frame of the generations to come.

Chuyện trò thế hệ. 

Chúng tôi thực ra là ai? “Chúng tôi” với tư cách là một phần của xã hội, một thế hệ, hay một cộng đồng hải ngoại? Để tìm thấy chính mình giữa các mối quan hệ, những kỳ vọng và định kiến không phải là điều dễ dàng. Âm nhạc và nghệ thuật là phương tiện giúp chúng ta thể hiện chính mình, được nghe và được hiểu! Cộng đồng người Đức gốc Việt cũng không phải là một ngoại lệ!

Loạt phim “Chuyện trò thế hệ” là những trải nghiệm đan xen giữa thời gian và không gian. Bằng cách liên kết các mảng của quá khứ, hiện tại và tương lai, khái niệm về cuộc sống hải ngoại được diễn tả qua những trải nghiệm thực tế. Trong các cốt truyện, nơi ranh giới giữa tiểu thuyết và hiện thực khá mong manh, các nhân vật chính kể các câu chuyện về cuộc đời mình dưới góc nhìn của họ, song qua đó truyền tải một phần lịch sử của thế hệ mình đang sống cũng như của cộng đồng. Các chủ đề trong loạt phim chủ yếu về âm nhạc, tình yêu, ký ức, về sự khác biệt thế hệ và cả cảm giác bị đứng ngoài lề. Dựa trên bối cảnh văn hóa Đức- Việt (tại Đức) kết hợp với các yếu tố mang tính cải lương của chương trình ca nhạc nổi tiếng „Paris by Night“. Thêm vào đó là bản ghi âm của chương trình phát thanh „Tiếng Quê hương“ ,được khôi phục từ Kho lưu trữ Phát thanh truyền hình Đức. Chương trình này được phát sóng hàng tuần ngay sau khi Bức tường Berlin sụp đổ, khi các diễn biến, đặc biệt đối với nhóm người lao động hợp đồng người Việt, đang bị đảo lộn.

VLab Berlin is a social entrepreneur spin-off from the Humboldt University of Berlin. Originating from the student initiative Vietnam Stammtisch @ Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the team has been actively promoting Vietnamese-German education and culture transfer since 2013. In the non-profit sector, we organize formal and informal (learning) events in order to make the diversity of the Vietnamese-German perspectives more visible and to create interfaces between generations and countries. In the business area, we offer services for imparting intercultural skills. The V stands for our connection to Vietnam, as a lab we are open to new formats of cultural transfer and education.
